Charles Russell's specialist Publishing Team is a multi-disciplinary
group of lawyers specifically formed to cater for the legal
needs of publishers (both of books and magazines), writers
and all others involved in the publishing industry. Many members
of the team have worked in-house so know how business works.
We have in-depth knowledge of the sector and provide practical
and commercially relevant advice to our clients. We have been
at the forefront of non-traditional publishing, from the video
publishing initiatives of the 80s and 90s to the provision
of contact online and by phone.
Corporate
We have acted on corporate deals that involved libraries of
book rights. Most recently we acted for Faber Music Ltd on
its acquisition of the UK music print-publishing business
previously carried by the Warner Chappell Group. We have also
worked on deals involving the businesses of The Bath Press,
Cassells, the Sanctuary Group and David & Charles, in
addition to deals we are not permitted to identify.
Defamation and Privacy
We advise people from all areas, including broadcasters, magazine
publishers, celebrities and other individuals, institutions,
websites and press agencies, in relation to libel and reputation
management. We provide a full range of services, including
advice on defamation, privacy, contract disputes and dealing
with regulatory bodies. We represented Hello! in its much-publicised
litigation with Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta Jones (privacy)
and Fraser-Woodward Limited against the BBC (fair dealing).
Copyright
Our intellectual property specialists deal with copyright,
trade-mark registration strategies, licensing and litigation.
We advise extensively on digital rights management and its
legal implications.
Rights Management
We provide advice to rights holders on all aspects of rights
management, exploitation and merchandising.
Combining our legal expertise and sector know-how, we are
fully equipped to help our clients achieve their commercial
objectives whilst being aware of the workings and intricacies
of the publishing world.
Literary Estates
Authors and trustees also have access to our Tax and Private
Client experts. For example we act for the estates of Hammond
Innes and Laurie Lee and we acted for the Literary Executors
of Philip Larkin.
