Once the distributor has recouped its advance, all its commissions and expenses, the balance is called "distributor's net" which is payable to the producer and is, in effect, "producer's gross".

Producer's gross is applied in paying the sales agent's fees and expenses and thereafter recouping the cost of production and interest, the payment of deferments and ultimately the distribution of net profits.

If one financier/distributor has financed the film, it is likely that that party will be the one administering the so called "producer's gross" and ultimately net profits; however, there are independent organisations such as National Film Trustee Company Limited which renders an independent collection service and/or trustee service to independent producers.

It is worth remembering that a film copyright is a 70 year revenue producing asset, and an efficient collector and administrator of those revenues, and one that is likely to survive for 70 years is essential for the full realisation of a film's commercial potential.
